THE MOMENT I KNEW MY LIFE HAD CHANGED by Maria Mazziotti Gillan

It was not until later
that I knew, recognized the moment
for what it was, my life before it,
a gray landscape, shapeless and misty;
my life after, flowering full and leafy
as the cherry trees that only today
have torn into bloom.
Imagine: my cousin at 19, tall,
slender. She worked in New York City.
For my thirteenth birthday she took me
to New York. We ate at the Russian Tea Room
where I was uncertain about which fork to use,
intimidated by the women in their hats and furs,
by the waiters who watched me
as I struggled with the huge hunk of bread
in the center of the onion soup in its steep bowl.
When we were ready to leave, I tried to give the tip
back to my cousin. I thought she had forgotten it.
She said, "No, it's for the waiter!"
On 57th Street a man in a camel coat bumped into me,
rushed on by. My cousin said, "That was Eddie Fisher,"
but I said, "He's too short. It can't be."
I felt let down that Eddie Fisher,
the star I was in love with that year, was so rude
he never even said "excuse me." Then we went into the theater
sat in the front row. the stage sprang into colored light, and
the glittery costumes, the singing, the magical story,
drew me in, made me feel in that moment,
that I would learn again and again,
the miraculous language, the music of it.
My life, turning away from the constricted world
of the 19th Street tenement, formed a line
almost perpendicular to that old life,
I moved toward it, breathed in this new air,
racing toward a world filled with poems and
music and books that freed me from everything
that could have chained me to the ground.

gloomy sunday

(sinead o'connor version)

t h e s u i c i d e s o n g

Gloomy Sunday - the notorious 'Hungarian Suicide Song' - was written in 1933. Its melody and original lyrics were the creation of Rezső Seress, a self-taught pianist and composer born in Hungary in 1899.

The crushing hopelessness and bitter despair which characterized the two stanza penned by Seress were superseded by the more mournful, melancholic verses of Hungarian poet László Jávor.

When the song came to public attention it quickly earned its reputation as a 'suicide song'. Reports from Hungary alleged individuals had taken their lives after listening to the haunting melody, or that the lyrics had been left with their last letters.

The lyricists Sam M. Lewis and Desmond Carter each penned an English translation of the song. It was Lewis's version, first recorded by Hal Kemp and his Orchestra, with Bob Allen on vocals (1936), that was to become the most widely covered.

The popularity of Gloomy Sunday increased greatly through its interpretation by Billie Holiday (1941). In an attempt to alleviate the pessimistic tone a third stanza was added to this version, giving the song a dreamy twist, yet still the suicide reputation remained. Gloomy Sunday was banned from the playlists of major radio broadcasters around the world. The B.B.C. deemed it too depressing for the airwaves.

Despite all such bans, Gloomy Sunday continued to be recorded and sold.

People continued to buy the recordings; some committed suicide.

Rezső Seress jumped to his death from his flat in 1968.

Travel

It always gets my goat whenever I hear of people going on a tour to this exotic place and being so busy snapping pictures with their cameras that they fail to enjoy the experience of just “taking in the scene".

It's like this proverbial story of this couple who were asked what they felt about their trip to Paris. They said, "Oh, we were so busy taking pictures to show friends back home that we didn't have time to look around ”.

Pathetic. I think that when people are on a tour, they should never bring any kind of capture device except their naked eye. One must immerse oneself to the experience of the moment: to breathe in the air, to feel the mood, to sense the place with all its history and its promises.

Flash bulbs flashing, people crowding in for a shot, artificial smiles born on a lip that says "cheese" spoils the spirit of a spot. How would you like a silent appreciation of a sunset interrupted by a commentary from some noisy guys?

The Time to Quit

(adapted)

Have you ever felt like quitting your job and finding a better workplace? We all have rough, stressful days when we feel like giving up and "looking for greener pastures."

Things are not what we wanted them to be: we wanted to do excellently at our
work, but we make mistakes and we get criticized for that. We needed sympathy but all we get sometimes is the rejection of an insensitive, coldly professional workplace. We look for commiseration, and sure, we get that from our caring friends, but after we blow off steam and get back to our office, we feel we couldn't take this "impersonality" anymore. We plod on, doing our job as efficiently as we could and sure enough, we get praise, and for a moment we smile and feel high. But things aren't going as smoothly as we want. We feel mediocre, spent, and stressed out.

WHAT IS EVERYTHING IN LIFE?

My husband is probably one of the guys people admire. We have moved six times in 10 years, always for a better paying, more prestigious job. But each move requires establishing new friendships and becoming part of the community. I dream of staying in one place long enough for my children to develop ongoing relationships, but I know this will never happen.

We drive a BMW, which some people admire as a status symbol. Actually, we have two of them. My husband seems satisfied with his job, his salary, and the city we live in, and is lucky that I am committed to keeping our family life strong and loving. But some days I feel like throwing in the towel.

Steve Jobs Resigns As Apple CEO, Will Become Chairman

Steve Jobs has resigned as chief executive officer of Apple. The reason is presumably health-related—Jobs went on indefinite medical leave in January—but neither Jobs nor Apple gave specifics in their statements. Tim Cook, Apple's chief operating officer, will replace Jobs as CEO, while Jobs will serve as chairman. Cook was already handling day-to-day operations during Jobs' leave of absence.

Jobs is stepping down during the best of times for Apple. Its iPhone is the most profitable smartphone on the market, and its iPad dominates the tablet market. Apple's redesigned MacBook Air laptops have also proven successful, prompting PC makers to scramble on their own ultra-thin designs.

Below is Steve Jobs' statement in full:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

K-pop frenzy? British girl gets tongue surgery to better speak Korean

Seoul (The Korea Herald/ANN) - A British girl who claims to be in love with Korean culture has had her tongue freed to speak its language better, according to Daily Mail.

Rhiannon Brooksbank-Jones, 19, was a typical student dreaming of working Korea in the future. Fascinated by the language, she even visits a local Korean church although she had never visited the country.

"I'd been learning Korean for about two years, and my speaking level is not high, but I was really struggling with particular sounds," Rhiannon told the Daily Mail.

"It became apparent after a little while that I was having trouble with the Korean letter 'L' which is very frequent and comes from a slightly higher place in the mouth than the English 'L,' and that my tongue was too short," she added.

In order to solve the issue, she consulted a doctor and found out that her tongue was too short. Even though she had no problem speaking English, she had determined to take the operation to speak Korean fluently, which was successful.

The operation was a lingual frenectomy, which cuts some of the connecting tissue between the tongue and the bottom of the mouth. Ironically, newspapers reported in 2002 that children in Gangnam were having the same procedure to help them speak English.

The girl hopes to major in Korean Studies and Business Management at the University of Sheffield, and perhaps also study at Yonsei University in Seoul.

"Korean people can be quite reserved at first, but once you get to know them, they are very warm hearted. They'll do anything for you," she also told the Daily Mail.

Her mother said she is very proud of her and she welcomes her interest in other parts of the world, the report added.
